CanPro plant begins operation

June 23, 2010

CanPro Ingredients Ltd.’s canola protein concentrate plant in Arborfield is now up and running, the company said Monday.

Full-scale production is also leading to commercial sales of its feed-grade insoluble canola protein concentrate. The concentrate, CanPro said, is for use in aquafeed and starter swine formulations and other feed applications that can make use of the sustainable, high-quality protein.

The Arborfield plant, located about 265 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon, is set to process 34,000 metric tonnes of whole seed canola annually, with anticipated production of 14,000 metric tonnes of canola oil, 8,500 metric tonnes of canola protein and 10,880 metric tonnes of canola hulls and syrup.

CanPro said the process implemented at the plant was developed by MCN BioProducts Inc. of Saskatoon over a decade-long period of laboratory and pilot scale research and development.

Initial commercial demand for the product has been strong, CanPro said, a sign that indicates the nutritional value of canola protein concentrates.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the plant is scheduled for Saturday.
